From the Plaza de Mayo, we walked up Defensa Street (considered the oldest street in Buenos Aires) Plaza Dorrego in San Telmo. It took a while to get there through all the crowds of people shopping the flea market/fair that they have every Sunday.
San Telmo is a popular and typical district; it's one of the oldest and traditional neighborhoods in the city. At the 19th century it was a district for the richest families of Buenos Aires. In 1871, with the outbreak of Yellow Fever, many fled to La Recoleta and the new immigrants took their place. The former mansions were transformed into "conventillos" (tenement houses) hosting hundreds of newcomers.
Today, the neighborhood of San Pedro Telmo is an important historic corner of the city. Ancient houses, restaurants and tango music give this place a very particular atmosphere. Locals and tourists alike flock to the Plaza Dorrego on the oldest street in the city, for the antique market and vibrant street performances, including tango, held on Sundays from 10am to 6pm.

some of the old buildings/mansions were beautiful. I couldn't help, but think of and be sad for the many that died from yellow fever and to try to picture what that neighborhood was like in its day.
